Ever wondered how you get a sinus infection? Ever wondered how you permanently get rid of a sinus infection? First of all we should explain what a sinus is. This will help us know how to truly combat sinus problems and what medicines will be effective and what medicines are not worth your money. Sinuses are located in between and behind the eyes and on either side of the nose. A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, usually occurs because of blockage of nasal passageways which results in inflammation. Sometimes these problems can become so serious that someone may have to receive sinus surgery. No one however should allow an infection to go that serious before doing something to help combat the sinus infection. Sinus infections can range from being acute which usually only last for about 3 weeks or from being chronic, which can last up to 8 weeks to having recurring acute attacks. Really, the scary thing is that sinus infections occur much more common then we think. About thirty percent of all people suffer from a sinus infection yearly. Therefore there have been many types of products made to combat this illness. Everything from antibiotics to anti-histamines and many different types of nasal sprays have been used, with some being more effective than others. Allow me to introduce one substance that perhaps no one has heard before. It is an all natural nutritional supplement called xylitol.
Xylitol looks and appears just like sugar. It has basically the same chemical structure except for one tiny difference. That difference is what makes xylitol an effective bacteria killer and sinus passageway cleanser. It has been used safely as a dietary supplement and in many different brands of gum because of its similarity in taste with sugar, but it is used effectively in a nasal spray to cleanse the nasal wall and relieve anyone who is suffering from an acute or chronic sinus infection. Here is how it works. First we have a saline nasal spray, which has been tested and used for a very long time by many allergy combating companies, and then we combine the cleansing effect of xylitol. Once it is used, bacteria found in the nasal wall consume the xylitol. The slight difference in the structure of xylitol and regular sugar make it impossible for bacteria to metabolize it and die because of xylitol's 5 carbon structure. Therefore your nasal wall and sinus passages remain essentially washed and cleansed which combats sinus problems and prevents future recurring acute sinus infections. This also helps with earaches and earache infections as well since many times they are directly related with sinus problems. We always worry about bacteria on our hands and wash them many times a day, but why not worry about the bacteria found in our sinuses, which is the culprit of so many sinus problems that we suffer from.
