Dust Mites Allergy: Controlling Those Unavoidable Dust Mites





Dust mite is the main cause of allergen inside the house. An estimated 10 percent of the entire population experiences dust mite allergy. Dust mites are very small which makes it impossible for a human with his naked eye to see it. They are cream colored, oval shaped, with eight legs.

Dust mite live from eating the shed skin, fingernails and hair of humans. They also consume pollen, bacteria, animal dander and fungi.

A doctor can only know if you have such allergy once he or she determins the following symptoms of dust mite allergy from you:

• Sneezing

• Watery eyes

• Itchy eyes

• Runny nose

• Nasal stuffiness

• Stuffy ears

• Asthma

• Respiratory problems

• Atopic dermatitis

How is dust mite allergy treated?

If the control of dust mite still does not relieve the symptoms of your allergy, your doctor may suggest you take any of the following medication:

• Antihistamines such as Claritin and benadryl

• Decongestant like Chlor-trimeton and Sudafed

• Nasal spray

• Nasal corticosteroid like Nasorex amd Flonase

• For asthma symptoms – Pulmicort and Flovent

• Ventolin, Foradil, Serevent

If the symptoms are still difficult to handle, the doctor may prescribe you with an allergy shot like immunotherapy in order to desensitize your body from dust mite allergy.

How can you prevent dust mite allergy?

Dust mites are unavoidable but they are controllable. Listed below are the steps that can help you control dust mites and free yourself from allergy:

• Wash your pillowcase, blankets and sheet once a week.

• Avoid using carpets.

• Vacuum your house once a week.

• Remove feathered and hairy animals inside your house and bedroom.

Avoiding the allergens that trigger such allergy is important for you to have a peaceful and healthy environment inside and outside your house.
